Shortly after 5 p.m. on Oct. 25, police say that the off-duty officer was driving his personal vehicle - not a marked cruiser - in the 2300 block of New York Avenue NE when the driver of a two-door Honda Accord pulled up behind at a high rate of speed, forcing the sergeant to slow down.

The Honda then pulled alongside his vehicle, and when the officer motioned for the Accord to go ahead of him, the driver pointed a handgun at him, police say. The sergeant then grabbed his own handgun and both fired shots, with the sergeant being struck at least once.

Officials noted that the officer returned fire, and his weapon was recovered at the scene of the incident.

The driver of the Honda fled northbound on to Montana Avenue NE, and the officer drove to DC Housing Authority Police Department Headquarters in the 2000 block of Walt Lincoln Way NE.

He notified officials there that he had shot, and DC Fire and Emergency Services personnel responded to the scene.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he is listed in critical but stable condition on Thursday. The driver of the Honda remains at large.

Anyone with information regarding the Honda driver or events leading to the shooting has been asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting a tip to 50411.
